All Aboard the Memphis-Elmwood Express

So why did I not post anything for you on Friday?
Because I couldn't. I just couldn't.
My TG and I were on the road all day, taking a trip. A trip that was supposed to take nine hours but which really took eleven.
And on which we did not embark until seven o'clock in the morning on Friday, when we had every intention of driving away from the domicile no later than six.
Good thing we got that hour back somewhere around Birmingham, Alabama.
Where on earth is she, you may be thinking about now.
I am in Memphis, Tennessee. For a little while longer.
No; it's not about Elvis. I have yet to see Graceland.
It's not about barbecue; we didn't eat any. It's not about ducks; we neither stayed at nor visited The Peabody.
It is about the fact that it's been my dream for a long time to visit a certain cemetery in Memphis: Elmwood.
Speaking of long times, it took an eternity to get here.
I don't know if I have ever told you this before, but I like visiting new places. I am just not particularly enamored of travel.
As in, I won't fly.
And if I were not aware that the Bible describes hell as a lake of fire and brimstone, I would describe it as a road trip.
But if I want to see things, I have no choice: I must grin and bear it.
Except, what I actually do is grimace and watch the clock a lot.
Frequent stops, coffee, snacks, and audio books help a little. To pass the time.
So here we are and the weather has been perfect and the cemetery far exceeded even my overwrought expectations.
I met a new friend. Her name is Anne and like me she is a taphophile but not at all like me, she makes fairy shoes and also vultures from okra pods. I want Veronica so do not order her.
Oh and there was Alex the rescued schnauzer-terrier mix. He says hai.
I took nearly eight hundred pictures. Only one from the car window. For all the others I got out.
We are leaving for home tomorrow. Somewhere around Birmingham we'll have to give that hour back.
But I wanted to show you a few of those pictures because I know how much you like that.
And I wanted to assure you that I did not fall on my face a single time.
That is all for now.

Oh Jenny! Are there no trains? I'm the same way about airplanes...no go! We have an AmTrack stopping in a tiny tiny rail stationed town called McGregor, Tx. We've never caught it but Larry's parents have and say it's a great way to travel if you don't want to drive....someday, we will!
LOVE the angel picking up the man...LOVE it!!
Great shots!
hughugs
I kind of like a good road trip, but not too long, and your day was a bit long!
The cemetery was worth it though - what a beautiful place! I love the swing; I've never seen a swing in a cemetery and I like the statement it makes.
Have a good drive back home.
What...only 800 pictures...LOL...I want to see them all you know! Elmwood truly was worth the wait, was it not? So my fellow Taphophile, have a safe trip home, and I hope it doesn't take 11 hours to get back. Happy memories in your dreams tonight!!!!
I'm so glad you didn't fall. I too need to see new places, but dread the trip there. I'm actually better on a bus trip than by car, (buses stop more often, and it seems like a new trip when you get back on, I don't like the strictness of the bus trip) You pictures look like you did a great job, and I'm glad you were able to get to your wish. TG sounds very patient.
Jenny! How absolutely fun, fun, fun! I am just now getting to Katie's computer and this is my first stop...I have told my girls about my New Taphophile Friend...Katie smiled and thought it was very cool...they know how I am! And you were so right in what you said on Saturday..."this"...cemetery photography, as well as all the other little arty directions I go in, is what I want to do now...this is it. No waiting on this or that. This isn't a dress rehearsal. Guess what? You know, Mickey Rooney passed this morning (we got to see him at a Judy Garland festival in Grand Rapids, MN, in 2003; but I digress)...Katie was getting dressed when we heard and it has definitely thrown a wrench into the smooth work-day plans for this Monday-before-leaving-for-Hollywood for the TCM bunch; however...I'm using the slight delay as an excuse to stay a couple more days (sorry, Mickey...or should I say "thank you"?) and I am going over to SAVANNAH...and Bonaventure...it will be a kind of rush-trip (I'm getting good at those) but I decided I HAVE to take pics while the dogwoods and azaleas are in bloom...Katie and I can go back and explore more in the fall...I lay awake last night trying to figure out how I could swing it...how I could justify such a flying-trip, when I really should be heading back to Swampeast Missouri and our own Dogwood Azalea festival...had about talked myself into waiting until next year...:(...then this morning, Mickey. Got to go...call me crazy!
Sooo...our meeting was a meant-to-be...humans could not coordinate such serendipitous things.
Love and hugs,
Anne
BTW...Veronica will be winging her way to you soon...my gift to you, my friend!
