If love were a flower ...
Tuesday, June 15, 2010 at 12:44AM ... for me it would not be the rich and velvety rose, much as I am captivated by it.
It would be the creamy, sultry gardenia, with a fragrance like romance at its most breathtaking.
I carried a huge bouquet of gardenias on my wedding day ... June 16, 1979. The florist picked them wild, fresh and dewy, from a Georgia fencerow that very morning.
This year TG bought me a gardenia bush ... a tiny one. He planted it outside the back door.
Here is some of its first yield. They're miniature (the vase is four inches tall), but their perfume fills the room ... and my heart.

What bells are to cities
you are to me
waker, warner, marker
of time's passing, lyricless
song of religion, God's voice
annuller, annealer, angel
of non-sequitur, mournful
chimer of hours, startler
of less hardy pigeons
sepulchral summoner
needer of steady metal
clamor-presider of avenues
periodic pusher of silence
caller, crooner, comforter
time-bending tribute-taker
soundtrack of soft dreams
gold-shot curtain of dolor
stalactite, stalagmite
everywhere and nowhere
asking, answering
creasing heaven, cross-heavy
bringer of rings.

I love gardenias, the smell is wonderful from the flowers. No perfume or cologne has ever captured that scent.
We had them out in Hawaii everywhere when we lived there with the Navy in the 80's. I loved living there.
@ Mari ... I thought so too, since he knows how much I love them. I wish you could grow gardenias in Michigan!
@ Crystal ... lilies are so beautiful!
@ Tracie ... agreed. Such a beautiful Southern look and aroma ... delicate yet strong.
@ Donna ... you can smell them from THERE? LOLOLOL that's cool ...
@ Debbie ... you're so right ... no perfume or cologne named "gardenia" lives up to its name. I'd love to see all the flowers in Hawaii!
